Black athletes never banned from figure skating in U.S.

Black athletes in the U.S. were never barred from competing in figure skating, but Jim Crow laws that persisted into the 1960s restricted access to the sport.

Figure skating is one of the most popular and the oldest sports included in the Winter Olympic Games. Its legacy dates back to the first Winter Olympics held in France in 1924.
