California Faces Supreme Court Deadline on GOP Request

California leaders face a one-week deadline to respond to legal challenges concerning the state’s recently adopted congressional maps. California Republicans have appealed their case to the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to block the implementation of Proposition 50.

Supreme Court Action

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan has ordered California to submit a responsive brief by January 29. According to a McGeorge law professor, the court typically requests briefings from both sides before making a decision. Granting the injunction would prevent the state from utilizing the new maps until the appeal is resolved.

Federal Support and Background

The Trump administration filed a brief on Thursday supporting the Republicans’ application before the Supreme Court. Proposition 50, approved by voters, led to the redrawing of maps for five districts, making them more favorable for Democratic candidates. These revised maps are scheduled for use in the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections. The proposition was initially introduced as a response to efforts in Texas to redraw districts to benefit Republican representation in the U.S. House of Representatives, a request made by President Donald Trump.

Previous Rulings and Current Stance

Earlier this month, a panel of federal judges upheld the new California maps. The Supreme Court has also permitted Texas’s newly drawn maps to proceed, despite claims of racial discrimination from Democrats in that state. The California Attorney General’s office stated earlier this week that it remains confident in the legality of Proposition 50.
