Chances of all-out war over Taiwan are ‘slim’, says US envoy

The prospects of an all-out war over Taiwan are “slim” because of Taipei’s military reforms and US military deployments in the region, Raymond Greene, the de facto American ambassador, has said.

But Greene said Taipei should do more to highlight the “grey zone” tactics used against the island and put pressure on Beijing.

“While we certainly aim to avoid an all-out war, the likelihood remains slim as Taiwan’s military reforms and US military deployments in the Pacific have consistently bolstered our deterrence capabilities against Beijing,” Greene told a podcast by local media outlet Mindi World News.

In the Mandarin-language discussion, Greene said one of the main challenges Taiwan faces is grey-zone warfare designed to pressure the island.

“These include … maritime clashes near the offshore islands, military exercises, legal warfare and psychological tactics,” he said.

“What Taiwan should do is highlight these actions by Beijing, because if the world knows these things are happening, they will condemn or apply some pressure on Beijing to prevent it from undermining the cross-strait status quo.”
