Comedian YY Grieves the Loss his Grandma

Kenyan stand-up comedian Oliver Otieno, widely known as YY, is mourning the loss of his grandmother, Zilpa Ogolla.
YY shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing his deep gratitude for the positive impact she had on his life. In his tribute, he wrote, “Rest well, Dani (Mama Zilpa Ogolla)… You fought a painful battle. Thank you for shaping my education. Dani will be laid to rest on September 27, 2024, in Kosele village. Nind Gi kwe Min Dolly.”

In a previous interview, YY spoke about the challenges of his childhood, including growing up in an abusive household. He revealed that the physical abuse he experienced in high school, particularly from his father, had a lasting impact on him.

YY recalled that his father, an alcoholic who was violent toward both him and his mother, passed away when he was in third grade. After his father’s death, his mother relocated to the village, closing her business and making life even harder for the family.
“I spent my early years in Nairobi until my dad passed away in Standard 3. He used to beat my mother severely, and I would try to step in to protect her,” YY shared during the emotional interview.
