The late Kikuyu Benga singer John De’Mathew’s son with his second wife, Carolyne Waithera, Tyrese Thiiru, officially completed his high school education last Friday, and his family couldn’t contain their joy.
Tyrese, the firstborn child of the late De’Mathew and Waithera, was among over 900,000 students who sat for the KCSE 2024 exams. He attended the renowned Thika High School in Kiambu County. Like many other students finishing high school, Tyrese was picked up by his family—but the grand manner of his reception set him apart.

An elated Ms. Waithera shared her excitement as she prepared to pick her son:
“Guys, my son has finished school! I am such a proud woman today. I’m so excited as I head to Thika High School to get him. My Lord, what can I tell God? How can I thank Him enough?”
Tyrese was received like royalty, leaving school in a white BMW limousine adorned with posters reading “Congrats, Tyrese Thiiru.” To top it off, a red carpet was rolled out for him, and he was accompanied by bodyguards as his family celebrated his achievement.
“Have you seen what the Lord has done? This is what I prayed for,” Ms. Waithera remarked after reuniting with her son.
However, the family’s extravagant celebration sparked mixed reactions online. While some congratulated the young graduate, others criticized the mother’s display. Waithera, undeterred by the negative comments, responded by expressing her pride and love for her son, regardless of his exam results.
“Even if he scores a D-, X, Y, or Z, he is still my child,” she said confidently.
She added, “Did you hear me? Even if the grade is W or Q, who is his mother? Who pays the fees? Congratulations, my Edward!”
