EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — As the sun rose on Black Friday, eager shoppers gathered at Academy Sports in Evansville, where the doors opened bright and early at 5 a.m. to kick off the holiday shopping season.

The store was bustling with customers vying for discounts on everything from camping gear to clothing. Standout deals included $10 flannels and 50% off graphic tees.

Timothy Burklow Jr., a long-time Academy shopper, was among the first in line. He was on the hunt for Christmas gifts for his family. “They have a great deal on their outerwear and their clothing, and everything like that — it’s like 50% off,” Burklow said. “$10 flannels, their graphic tees are 50% off. Men in our family wear stuff like that, so yeah.”

Burklow, who has been shopping at Academy Sports his entire life, joked about his role for the day. “I’m just here as the bodyguard, just in case there are those punches that come through or whatever,” he said.

While many shoppers were after big-ticket items, others came for the experience. A group of friends, known as the “Black Friday Crew,” kept their tradition alive with personalized shirts featuring fun titles like “Most Likely to Be Late” and “Most Likely to Need a Diet Coke.”

The group had plans to continue their Black Friday shopping at other stores, including Walmart, Target, and Kohl’s. They shared their excitement for the day ahead, including a stop at American Eagle.

For some, Black Friday is more than just a shopping spree — it’s about friendship and making memories. “Black Friday is not what it used to be. We do it for the friendship and the fun. Simply, we know we’re spending the day together making memories — and then we’ll scrapbook it,” said one member of the crew.

For others, it’s about treating themselves. Tammy Vinnedge was excited to pick up a jacket she had been eyeing. “A jacket that I like, and I never buy myself anything like this,” she said.

Shoppers throughout the store were bustling with excitement, sharing shopping tips and helping one another find the best deals. Despite the rise of online shopping, the in-store experience was still a draw for many.

If you’re planning to take advantage of Black Friday deals, here are some helpful tips:

Many retailers, including Target, offer price matching. Be sure to check with customer service for the best prices.

Some stores have app-exclusive discounts and free shipping options, so be sure to check your favorite store’s app before heading out.

Don’t forget to ask about extra perks like gift wrapping services.

With everything from cookware to children’s toys, Academy Sports and other retailers are offering huge savings to shoppers ready to take on the Black Friday madness.
