East Bay organization led by Black Millennials fights food insecurity, one grocery bag at a time

After cheering on the East Oakland Collective for months on Instagram, Najaree Hayfron and her daughter Nala, 10, decided it was time to volunteer for the organization’s quarterly food drive.

“To give back to people in need, it’s a great experience,” Hayfron said. “My daughter didn’t want to leave; she kept going from table to table to help put kits together. That was gratifying to see.”

The Oakland duo were among more than 200 volunteers who showed up on a cold Saturday morning in mid-November for the collective’s
