The California Department of Public Health reported the first known case in the U.S. of an emerging mpox strain on Saturday.
According to the CDPH, the person identified with mpox was treated in San Mateo County and is now isolating at home while recovering.
They recently traveled to Africa, where the clade I strain is circulating in the east and central regions, the CDPH said. Health officials say mpox clade I has historically caused more severe illness than clade II, which has been circulating in California and the U.S. since 2022.

Health officials said the risk to the public remains low and there is no evidence that suggests mpox is spreading across the state or country.
The mpox specimens from the traveler will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more lab testing.
