IJM Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking Advance

Grace McElmurry, representing the International Justice Mission (IJM), spoke about the organization’s work in combating human trafficking during Human Trafficking Awareness Month. McElmurry, based in Fayetteville, discussed IJM’s mission and strategies for addressing this global issue.

Combating Human Trafficking

The International Justice Mission is described as the largest human rights organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking. IJM collaborates with local authorities to remove victims from exploitative situations, prosecute perpetrators, strengthen justice systems, and provide aftercare for survivors. McElmurry highlighted the scale of the problem, noting that approximately 50 million people are currently living in modern-day slavery, a figure significantly larger than the population of Arkansas.

Awareness and Financial Impact

McElmurry emphasized the importance of raising awareness about human trafficking, particularly regarding the financial impact of the industry. She stated that human trafficking generates an estimated $236 billion annually. McElmurry shared personal efforts to raise awareness and funds, including marathons and the “Dress Number” campaign.

Recent IJM Initiatives

Recent efforts by IJM have focused on addressing labor trafficking and identifying scamming compounds located overseas. The organization maintains a global presence, with 34 field offices operating in 19 countries.

Taking Action

McElmurry encouraged public engagement, suggesting individuals stay informed by following IJM on social media. She also recommended supporting IJM’s work through donations, even small contributions, and reaching out to local organizations involved in combating human trafficking.
