Kenya Airways is expected to have a new board of directors appointed before the end of the week. This development is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize and strengthen the national carrier.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced on Tuesday that the appointment process is advanced and adheres to corporate governance standards. President William Ruto previously stated his commitment to finalizing the board’s composition, which will include both men and women tasked with leading the airline’s transformation.
Chirchir confirmed that the necessary procedures are underway, following the governance protocols required for a publicly listed company. He anticipates the new board will be in place by the end of the week to fill current vacancies.
The government aims to establish a corporate board capable of guiding the airline through a competitive global aviation landscape. The board’s responsibilities include providing strategic leadership, corporate governance oversight, financial stewardship, and policy direction.
The Kenya Airways board of directors sets the long-term strategy for the airline, oversees financial performance and restructuring plans, and appoints and supervises senior management, including the chief executive officer. It also ensures compliance with aviation, corporate, and international regulations, and protects shareholder interests.
Kenya Airways has both government and private shareholders. The board typically comprises government representatives, independent non-executive directors, and representatives of major institutional shareholders.
The reconstitution of the board coincides with government efforts to overhaul infrastructure at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the airline’s primary hub and Kenya’s main international gateway.
