Kenya’s runners are preparing to compete in the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, this Saturday. The event will see Kenya, the defending overall champions, aiming to reclaim the individual gold medal.
The Kenyan team will face a strong challenge from Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, the defending champion seeking a third consecutive title.
Daniel Ebenyo will lead Kenya’s charge in the men’s senior race. He is expected to encounter stiff competition from Kiplimo and Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi, who has previously secured silver medals in the event. Uganda’s team will also include Dan Kibet, a member of their silver medal-winning team at the last championships.
The race’s outcome could depend on the tactical approaches of the leading runners. Kiplimo has often employed a strategy of setting a fast pace early in the race, potentially breaking away from rivals. However, if the race remains closely contested, Ebenyo’s experience and finishing strength could prove advantageous for Kenya.
Ebenyo will be supported by a strong Kenyan team consisting of Ishmael Rokitto, Edwin Bett, Robert Koech, Weldon Langat, Shadrack Koech, Denis Kemboi, and Kevin Chesang. This marks Ebenyo’s return to the national team since 2023.
The Kenyan squad has been in training camp for a month, with Rokitto reporting that preparations have been positive and there are no significant injuries. The team is motivated to perform well, aiming to both defend their overall championship title and secure the individual gold.
The 46th edition of the World Cross Country Championships will be held in the United States, marking the event’s return to the country.
