Kenya’s Ruto Sets Limits on Drugs Alcohol Gambling

President William Ruto announced significant policy changes aimed at combating drugs, illegal alcohol, and gambling in Kenya. He stated the government is prepared to enact stricter laws and confiscate assets associated with these activities.

Speaking on January 3, 2025, Ruto emphasized the need for decisive action, citing the devastating impact of addiction on young people and families. He urged Parliament to support the proposed legislation without delay.

Confiscation of Assets in Illegal Alcohol Trade

The government intends to empower the state to seize property used in criminal activities, specifically targeting the illegal alcohol trade. Vehicles used for transporting illicit liquor will be forfeited to the government upon conviction. Individuals involved in the sale or distribution of illegal alcohol risk losing all assets connected to the operation.

Increased Penalties for Drug Trafficking

President Ruto announced plans to significantly increase penalties for drug dealers, particularly those dealing in hard drugs like heroin and cocaine. He proposed the death penalty for individuals convicted of selling these substances, especially those who do not use them but target young people.

Gambling Regulations

The government is developing stricter regulations for the gambling industry. Ruto stated that betting businesses will face increased oversight and will no longer be allowed to operate without firm regulation.

Call for Legislative Support

Ruto addressed Parliament, urging lawmakers to prioritize and support the proposed legislation. He argued that the damage caused by drugs and other vices necessitates immediate and comprehensive action.

Addressing Social Impact

The President highlighted the widespread suffering caused by addiction within Kenyan families. He emphasized the importance of restoring discipline and social order to secure Kenya’s future and alleviate the pain experienced by many parents. The proposed legal changes are anticipated to generate national discussion regarding the proposed penalties and the government’s intensified efforts to combat addiction-related crimes.
