Lily Allen just convinced us to replace our black leather jackets with this new and improved outerwear

Lily Allen is currently enjoying the release of her latest album, the first for seven years. By now – unless you’ve been avoiding the internet – you’ll likely be familiar with West End Girl even if you haven’t listened to it, considering the amount of discussion it has generated. While people continue to scrutinise the lyrics of each song – Allen wrote the album during the breakdown of her marriage to David Harbour – the singer has been enjoying herself in the US, where she’s been dressing up as Madeline for Halloween (fans of the album will understand that meta-reference) and encouraging us all to ditch our black leather jackets.
Leaving the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, Allen wore an oversized brown leather jacket that has made us reconsider the black styles we have hanging in our wardrobes. While the singer wore hers with a crop top and mini skirt – it is LA – the chocolatey hue of the jacket somehow felt fresher and more interesting than its black counterpart. This could be, in part, due to the fact that chocolate brown is the colour du jour, with so many of the best dressed swapping other neutrals (especially black) in favour of this particular shade.

Allen isn’t the only one favouring brown leather jackets, either. Tessa Thompson wore her own oversized style by Saint Laurent while she was in London for the BFI Film Festival, pairing it with checked culottes and a matching shirt, also from the French fashion house. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, was a symphony of brown in Magda Butrym’s snap-collar leather jacket, Dôen’s cashmere dress and suede heeled boots by Manolo Blahnik.
It’s possibly not a surprise to know that, in the autumn/winter 2025 collections, brown leather jackets played a major part. Chloé, Coach, Emilia Wickstead, Hermès, Khaite, Prada and Saint Laurent all showed the shade, cementing chocolate leather as the key cover-up of the season.
The best way to wear yours now? Embrace the brown renaissance and wear the colour top-to-toe (à la Swift), or throw over an autumnal print like Thompson. The beauty of these jackets is that they go with everything – yes, even black, contrary to popular belief – and have the same staying power as black leather jackets.
