Moroccan football authorities have announced intentions to pursue legal action regarding the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. The match was marked by controversy, including protests from Senegalese players and attempts by fans to storm the pitch.
The AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal was disrupted by several incidents. Following a penalty awarded to Morocco in the 98th minute, Senegalese players, led by their coach, initially walked off the field in protest. After a delay, the players and coach returned, and Senegal’s goalkeeper saved the penalty. Senegal ultimately won the game 1-0 in extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) stated it will take legal action against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA. The federation seeks a ruling on the Senegalese national team’s withdrawal from the field and the events surrounding the penalty decision, which they maintain was correct according to expert analysis. The FRMF believes the walk-off significantly impacted the match and player performance. They also expressed gratitude for the support received from the Moroccan public and those involved in the competition’s success.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced it is reviewing footage of the match and will refer the matter to competent bodies for action against those found guilty. FIFA president Gianni Infantino condemned the “unacceptable scenes” both on the field and in the stands, criticizing the behavior of supporters, Senegal players, and staff. He emphasized the importance of respecting match officials’ decisions.
With the score tied, Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr had a goal disallowed minutes before the end of regulation time. Deep into stoppage time, Morocco was awarded a penalty after a foul by Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf on Brahim Diaz. This prompted coach Pape Thiaw to lead most of his players off the field. Fights broke out between Moroccan substitutes and Senegalese players, and some Senegalese fans attempted to storm the pitch. The Senegalese players eventually returned to the field after being persuaded by Sadio Mane. Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Gueye then scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of extra time.
Pape Gueye described the match as “very difficult” but stated Senegal “gave everything.” Morocco coach Walid Regragui expressed disappointment for the Moroccan people, noting that a penalty in the final minute can feel like a near victory. He congratulated Senegal and expressed regret over the events surrounding the penalty decision, which he felt reflected poorly on African football.
