Nelson Stevens turned Springfield’s Black neighborhoods into living art galleries; a new show takes us back in time

SPRINGFIELD — They brought scaffolds and paint, but the improvements this squad had in mind were new to Springfield’s Winchester Square.

As work on a bright and bold mural progressed, people from the neighborhood, now known as Mason Square, stopped by. A child named Marcus was a regular.
