New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asked split-ticket voters on Instagram Sunday to explain why they support both her, or another Democrat, and President-elect Donald Trump.
The answers — some of which Ocasio-Cortez posted — mostly pointed to what users described as an overlapping political style, particularly their blunt attacks on the political establishment.
“You are focused on the real issues people care about,” one said. “Similar to Trump populism in some ways.” “I feel like Trump and you are real,” said another.
Other users pointed to the Biden Administration’s policy in Israel and Gaza and a desire for change — of any kind — at the top of the ticket, writing, “Wanted change so I went with trump and blue for the rest of the ballot to put some brakes” on him.
The posts were the latest entries into Democrats’ post-election reckoning. Trump won all seven battleground states on his way to more than 300 electoral votes. He picked up ground nearly everywhere, including Ocasio-Cortez’s home state of New York, though congressional Democrats still managed to blunt the red wave.
Not everyone enjoyed the exercise. One reply to her question underscored the Democratic dread hanging over what figures to be a long-term political reclamation project.
“The responses you got make me want to barf,” the user said.
Ocasio-Cortez replied with a cry-laughing emoji, saying, “Sometimes you gotta dig in and see it to understand and adapt! Even if it makes you want to barf.”
After her story went viral, she posted a few more questions, including about issues like the economy, Gaza, the border, and “race and gender.” She also asked where Trump voters or Trump-Democratic “split-voters” got their news and media, including podcasts, during the election.
“Asking where you got your news from is not stating – or alleging disinformation,” Ocasio-Cortez added, repeatedly saying she was not “judging” respondents.
