Cantlay pulls US level on eight

Jack Rathborn at Bethpage Black:

“Long par putts on seven: Cantlay with a magnificent effort to make par and swing the pressure back to Hatton.

Bradley enthusiastically claps and loud cries of U-S-A ring around the green. The noise finally settles and Hatton’s putt misses left, a massive roar! The Englishman mutters to himself and this one is all square as we head to eight.”

  • 2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg
  • English/Morikawa v McIlroy/Fleetwood 4UP
  • Schauffele/Cantlay v Rahm/Hatton A/S
  • Henley/Scheffler v MacIntyre/Hovland 2UP

Morikawa misses short putt to fall further behind

English bails out Morikawa’s poor tee shot with a lovely chip, but Morikawa misses the short putt and they are now four down. It’s another horror show for this pair, who shouldn’t have been sent out this morning in my opinion. They were awful yesterday too.

MacIntyre and Hovland meanwhile have birdied the fifth to go 2UP against Scheffler-Henley.

  • 2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg
  • English/Morikawa v McIlroy/Fleetwood 4UP
  • Schauffele/Cantlay v Rahm/Hatton 1UP
  • Henley/Scheffler v MacIntyre/Hovland 2UP

Cantlay is livid

Jack Rathborn reporting from the course at Bethpage Black:

“Oof, Cantlay is livid, his approach on seven provokes a club plunged into the fairway, a divot jumping up. Frustration for the USA.

Hatton is just off the fairway in the whispy rough. “That’s a horrible lie,” “probably lay up here,” “punch out, Tyrrell!” Advice and heckles galore from the Americans here.”

Hatton recovers well to keep Europe in the hole.

Aberg responds to DeChambeau putt

A big moment on the ninth green, as DeChambeau finds the cup from long range and celebrates wildly. Huge pressure on Aberg, who nails it from six feet. A big putt, that, to keep Europe in alive in match one.

Morikawa misses the eighth green

Fleetwood’s tee shot on the par-three eighth is just half a cub short of the pin but finds the green, unlike Morikawa, who finds the rough and only just avoids the only water on the course. The US in big trouble there.

  • 2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg
  • English/Morikawa v McIlroy/Fleetwood 3UP
  • Schauffele/Cantlay v Rahm/Hatton 1UP
  • Henley/Scheffler v MacIntyre/Hovland 1UP

Hatton arrows one on six

Jack Rathborn reports from Bethpage Black:

“A brilliant response from Hatton, a crushed drive, splitting the fairway. He puffs his chest out as he walks towards the fairway, flexing his arms a little, then grabbing a banana for some fuel. He’ll have six feet to make birdie after Rahm’s sensational approach. A smart play from Europe.

Schauffele with a sawn off wedge, it’s to 15 feet, a high quality tussle on six here.”

Fleetwood extends European lead in match three

Fleetwood pours in another putt from 15 feet and that piles the pressure on Morikawa now, from 12 feet… he pulls it wide.

Fleetwood and McIlroy are 3UP now and cruising.

  • 2UP DeChambeau/Young v Fitzpatrick/Aberg
  • English/Morikawa v McIlroy/Fleetwood 3UP
  • Schauffele/Cantlay v Rahm/Hatton 1UP
  • Henley/Scheffler v MacIntyre/Hovland 1UP

Aberg misses!

On the eighth hole Fitzpatrick puts Aberg in position for a birdie but the putt of the European lips out of the cup!

The US make a birdie and double their lead in as many holes.

Europe need to stem the momentum in this match.

A slight swing to US

The last 10 minutes or so have seen a couple of errors from Europe with McIlroy wild with the iron and Fitzpatrick/Hatton missing putts.

The US have won a couple of holes but are only ahead in one match.

Schauffele and Cantlay have cut the gap on Rahm and Hatton to just one though.

Rahm is booed by unsettling crowd

“Rahm is booed after backing off his birdie putt, with a bug hovering above his ball. The crowd not settling and the Spaniard forced to putt over the noise.

“It starts right and stays there, a slight misread from Rahm, but the pace was good.

“Vice-captain Snedeker is greenside for this one and there’s a grimace as Schauffele’s putt creeps past the left edge, it was a superb effort, the American fans thought it was in.

“And Hatton’s par putt misses!

“The American crowd roars, lots of applause despite the hole won by a European miss. Rahm slaps his teammate on the back, Hatton muttering to himself and gesticulating with his hands as he slips off the side of the green to the sixth tee box. Just one up to the Europeans here now.”
