South Africa denies seeking to host 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

South Africa’s minister of sport, Gayton McKenzie, has addressed recent reports suggesting the country will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). McKenzie’s statement clarifies that South Africa has not been officially awarded hosting rights for the tournament.

Support Role, Not Host Status

According to McKenzie, South Africa has only offered to support the Confederation of African Football (CAF) should alternative hosting arrangements become necessary. This clarification follows comments made by Deputy Minister of Sport, Peace Mabe, who indicated South Africa’s readiness to “take over” hosting duties.

Comments Spark Clarification

Mabe’s remarks, made during the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards ceremony, highlighted South Africa’s infrastructure and recent successful hosting of a G20 Conference as evidence of its preparedness. She stated, “We have the necessary infrastructure; our stadiums are well-maintained. We have recently held a very successful G20 Conference here in South Africa, so yes, we are ready.”

Morocco Still Official Host

McKenzie emphasized that Mabe’s comments should not be interpreted as confirmation of hosting rights. He stated that Morocco remains the officially designated host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and no formal decision has been made to relocate the tournament.

Tournament Dates

The 2026 WAFCON is currently scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
