South African Sci-Fi Film Rupture Debuts

Abongwe L. Booi has released ‘Rupture,’ a new South African science fiction short film. Booi, a SAMA-nominated writer, director, and producer, has previously worked on projects for Visit Dubai, HBO, Will Linley, Manana, Ben Rodrigues, and Duram Paint.

The film centers on three special operators tasked with retrieving a mysterious package from an abandoned warehouse. The mission takes an unexpected turn when the package exhibits unusual behavior, blurring the lines between reality and the supernatural.

Inspiration and Production

Booi drew inspiration for ‘Rupture’ from SCP-069, an alarm clock known for its escalating volume. This concept of a mundane annoyance escalating into something unsettling formed the basis of the narrative.

The film was produced rapidly, with principal photography completed in a single day. Boris Petranko delivered a performance alongside first-time actors Robert Sam-Kputu and Daniel Koeslag. Charles Kes provided narration and voiced the whistleblower who reveals the mission’s outcome.

Crew and Post-Production

Dumisa Rankin served as co-director and co-director of photography, contributing to the film’s efficient production. Joshua Esousa handled sound recording, while Hloma Sotyato worked as a production assistant. Mlamli Booi served as executive producer. Composer Bubele Booi spent months refining the film’s atmosphere during post-production.

Booi expressed a commitment to creating speculative stories rooted in South Africa. He aims to develop South African visions of the future, rather than relying on external perspectives.

Booi’s artistic interests include magical realism, fractured realities, and technocratic worlds that evoke a sense of familiarity and unease. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and creating ambitious, challenging, and unique works.

‘Rupture’ represents a step toward Booi’s planned debut feature film, which will continue to explore South Africa’s future. The short film is noted for its ambition, its strong South African identity, and its blend of action, science fiction, and horror elements.
