The Marianas Open 2025 Post-Tournament Gala, held on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Guam, marked a milestone for Guam’s jiujitsu community. During the evening, Marianas Open President Steve Shimizu was awarded a black belt in Brazilian jiujitsu by Edison Kagohara, recognizing Shimizu’s more than 27 years of dedication, leadership and contribution to the martial art.

For nearly three decades, Shimizu has been a cornerstone of Guam’s BJJ culture, uniting practitioners, elevating local talent and bringing global attention to the island. Through his vision and commitment, he transformed the Marianas Open into one of the most respected tournaments in the Pacific.

Under his leadership, the event has consistently drawn world champions and top competitors from around the globe, establishing Guam as a premier destination for international grappling. The tournament has showcased local talent while raising global standards for professionalism, hospitality and excellence in competition.
