Arsenal Football Club has just hosted a memorable evening as the Arsenal family and wider community celebrated the launch of a new book titled Black Arsenal.
The landmark book, by Dr Clive Nwonka, offers a comprehensive exploration of Arsenal’s connection with Black British identity and culture, thanks to decades of iconic Black players and the storied and diverse histories of its supporters on the terraces.
Providing a blend of celebration and reflection, the event marked the book’s launch and in turn, brought together a slew of distinguished guests and Gooners, from Arsenal legends and cultural trailblazers to influential figures from football, music, culture, and beyond.
Attendees on the night included Baroness Lola Young, anti-racism campaigner Troy Townsend, The Mayor of Islington Cllr Anjna Khurana, former Arsenal players Gus Caesar, Martin Keown, and Perry Groves, DJ Reggie Yates, and artists, Chipmunk, Fumez the Engineer and Jelani Blackman.
Meanwhile, guests enjoyed a live DJ set by Radio 1’s Jeremiah Asiamah, Caribbean cuisine, and exclusive artwork by creative agency Jerrard Wayne inspired by the book’s themes. The event fostered engaging conversations and powerful tributes, culminating in a panel discussion featuring Arsenal legends Paul Davis and Anita Asante, alongside Arsenal supporter and Ezra Collective musician Femi Koleoso and Dr Clive Nwonka. The discussion considered how Arsenal has become a powerful symbol of multicultural unity, and its significance in today’s society.
Dr Clive Nwonka, editor of Black Arsenal, said: “Arsenal’s relationship with Black culture isn’t something that can be easily summarised. This book reflects on what Arsenal means to Black Britons and how it continues to influence a broader sense of belonging. Arsenal’s affinity with Black identity transcends football and spreads across cultures: in the media, music, fashion, politics, and everyday social experiences. Tonight was a wonderful celebration of that.”
