GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – With the new senate sworn in, one of South Carolina’s own is making history.
Senator Tim Scott is now the longest-serving African American U.S. senator. He will also be the first African American chairman of a senator standing committee.
The republican will lead the banking, housing and urban affairs committee.
Scott first took office in 2013 after then Governor Nikki Haley appointed him to replace Senator Jim Demint. He later won a special election to fill out the remainder of Demint’s term before winning his first full term in 2016.
Scott has said in the past that he does not plan to run for re-election in 2028.
