US Black Mayors President leads delegation to Ghana

The US delegation paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Nancy Sam
A high-profile delegation from the United States, led by Mayor Van R Johnson II, President of the African American Mayors Association (AAMA), arrived in Ghana for a historic visit to the motherland on July 25, 2025.
This marks their first official trip to Ghana, symbolising a renewed commitment to cultural, economic, and diaspora engagement between African Americans and the African continent.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Nancy Sam, the Tourism Ambassador for Miami, Florida USA, who received and hosted the team upon their arrival in Accra, Ghana.
Ambassador Nancy Sam, who also serves as President of Women in Tourism Ghana and Vice President of the ECOWAS Tourism Private Sector Confederation, welcomed the mayor and delegation with a special royal Ghanaian dinner to celebrate their arrival and heritage connection.
“It is an honour to welcome our brothers and sisters home. This visit is not just symbolic, it is a bridge between our shared history and the future we can build together,” Ambassador Sam said.
The visit aims to foster people-to-people connections and strengthen partnerships between local Ghanaian authorities and African American municipal leaders.
As part of their itinerary, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi; visit the historic Cape Coast Slave Castle, a site of deep significance in the transatlantic slave trade.
They also met with the Mayor of Accra to discuss urban development, tourism, and diaspora collaboration.
Mayor Van R Johnson II, who is also the Mayor of Savannah, Georgia, expressed profound appreciation for the warm Ghanaian welcome and emphasised the importance of reconnecting with ancestral roots.
The visit by the President of U S Black Mayors delegation is seen as part of ongoing efforts to promote tourism, investment, and cultural exchange between Ghana and the US African diaspora.
