Angus Crichton has signed a two-year deal to join the NSW Waratahs, ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh expressed confidence in Crichton’s ability to contribute to the team.
Phil Waugh suggested a potential transition for Crichton to join the Wallabies on the Spring Tour as part of the Nations Championship, following a similar path to former teammate Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii. Waugh indicated that this would depend on Crichton’s fitness and readiness following the conclusion of the NRL season. The goal is to build team cohesion and combinations in preparation for the Rugby World Cup.
Waugh highlighted Rugby Australia’s disciplined recruitment approach, citing the returns of Joseph Suaalii, Mark Nawaqawase, and Angus Crichton. He emphasized the importance of players having a prior history in rugby, acknowledging that mastering the nuances of the sport takes time. Waugh believes Crichton’s athleticism will bring a unique edge to the team.
Waugh drew parallels to his own playing era, referencing the positive impact of Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri, and Matt Rogers. He stated that the inclusion of world-class athletes elevates the competition for selection and increases the overall professionalism within the team environment. Waugh expressed excitement about Crichton’s commitment to Australian Rugby for the 2027-28 seasons.
