Like many Asian Americans, I was once a firm believer in the American ideals of merit and grit.
Growing up, I attended a magnet school in New York City, a public high school like San Francisco’s elite Lowell High that required an admissions test. Tens of thousands of middle schoolers prepared for years to take this test. The overwhelming majority didn’t make the cut. The ones who did seemed to already know each other from the prep courses they’d taken to get there.
