AFLA Internship Offers Human Rights and Justice Experience 2026

The African Foundation for Legal Aid (AFLA) is seeking interns to support its work in human rights and international justice. This internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in research, advocacy, and capacity-building within a professional setting.

Overview

The internship offers exposure to human rights law, international criminal proceedings, and strategic advocacy initiatives. Interns will work directly with experienced practitioners and a collaborative team, contributing to AFLA’s mission while developing legal skills and enhancing research and communication abilities.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will engage in a variety of tasks, including research and documentation, advocacy and capacity-building support, communications and public engagement, and administrative and operational support. Research responsibilities involve producing reports and briefing notes on human rights issues and international justice topics, documenting legal proceedings, and monitoring International Criminal Court (ICC) proceedings.

Advocacy and capacity-building support includes assisting with workshops, seminars, and online trainings, as well as developing materials for advocacy campaigns. Communications and public engagement tasks involve supporting the production of AFLA podcasts, managing social media channels, and contributing to outreach strategies. Administrative support includes document management, scheduling, and maintaining accurate records.

Requirements

Applicants must hold an advanced degree in law, international law, human rights, or a related field. A demonstrated understanding of human rights law, international justice, and relevant legal frameworks is required. Fluency in English is essential, and working knowledge of French is an asset.

Ideal candidates possess excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex legal information. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are also necessary. Familiarity with monitoring legal proceedings, digital tools, and multimedia projects is beneficial. A sense of humor and adaptability are valued.

Supervision and Mentorship

Interns will receive direct supervision from a seasoned international justice lawyer and a small team of associates. This mentorship model provides guidance on substantive legal work, advocacy, and communications, and exposure to practical decision-making processes in international law and human rights work.

Learning and Development Opportunities

The internship offers hands-on experience in international justice and human rights research, exposure to capacity-building and advocacy initiatives, and a practical understanding of International Criminal Court proceedings. Interns will also gain experience in communications, social media management, and content creation, and develop professional skills such as teamwork, independent project management, legal analysis, and professional communication.
