Kenya Boosts Digital Economy Through Investment and Expansion

The Kenyan government has reiterated its dedication to youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and job creation through various initiatives. These programs focus on fostering economic opportunities and developing digital skills within the country.

On January 20, 2026, President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki officially launched the NYOTA Project at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The project provided KSh 258.4 million in business capital support to 10,337 young entrepreneurs from Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado Counties. The event was attended by Cabinet Secretaries, Governors, Principal Secretaries, and other key stakeholders.

NYOTA Project Details

The NYOTA Project aims to create employment, enhance income generation, and promote savings among Kenya’s youth population. In addition to the financial support provided, the government has implemented several digital programs focused on entrepreneurship and job creation.

Digital Economy Initiatives

To strengthen the digital economy, the government has facilitated the local assembly of five million smartphones, priced between KSh 6,000 and KSh 8,000. Furthermore, 350 digital hubs have been established in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. The plan is to establish a total of 1,450 digital hubs across wards nationwide to address the digital divide, improve skills, and encourage innovation.

Infrastructure Development

The government is also rolling out 100,000 kilometres of high-speed fibre optic infrastructure across the country. This initiative is intended to improve connectivity and access to digital services.

Cabinet Secretaries present at the launch included Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives & MSMEs), Salim Mvurya (Youth Affairs, Creative Economy & Sports), Alfred Mutua (Labour & Social Protection), and Deborah Barasa (Environment, Climate Change & Forestry). Governors Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) were also in attendance.

The launch underscored Kenya’s commitment to empowering youth, expanding digital skills, and accelerating economic growth through entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation.
