The Louisiana State University (LSU) Dance Team concluded a successful season with notable achievements in both hip-hop and jazz performances. Their routines gained significant attention on social media, particularly their hip-hop set which drew inspiration from Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 Super Bowl halftime show.
The LSU Dance Team competed at the 2026 UDA College & Dance Team National Championships on January 18. Their collegiate rendition of the Kendrick Lamar-inspired hip-hop routine quickly went viral, garnering praise for its tribute to the rapper’s performance.
The routine incorporated several of Lamar’s recent hits, including “Squabble Up,” “TV Off,” and “Not Like Us.” Dancers showcased hip-hop elements throughout the performance, which also featured audio from Samuel L. Jackson’s appearance in the Super Bowl Halftime show. The team’s attire included denim-blue sets with “be humble” printed on the briefs, referencing a phrase associated with Lamar since his 2017 album “DAMN.”
The LSU Dance Team achieved their highest ranking ever, securing second place in both the Lamar-inspired hip-hop set and the jazz routine. While they were narrowly edged out by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the hip-hop competition, the performance resonated widely online. Numerous viewers expressed their support and admiration for the team, with many believing they deserved first place.
Despite not winning the top prize, the LSU Dance Team successfully captured a significant cultural moment and continues to inspire performers. The hip-hop routine is available for viewing online.
