Africa Rising Music Conference Announces 2026 Speakers and Program

The Africa Rising Music Conference (ARMC) will return to Constitution Hill in Johannesburg on May 22 and 23, 2026. The conference aims to facilitate industry exchange within Africa’s music ecosystem, serving as a platform for artists, executives, technologists, and cultural workers.

Sarah Jane Nicholson, Founder and Conference Director of ARMC, emphasized the conference’s focus on creating pathways between artists, executives, markets, and ideas. She anticipates a program centered on collaboration, cultural relevance, and long-term industry impact.

Past Reflections on Industry Exchange

Yvonne Chaka Chaka, speaking at the 2025 conference, highlighted the importance of continuous learning and exchange within the music industry. She encouraged ongoing engagement, both receiving and imparting knowledge, emphasizing the value of listening and sharing experiences.

Confirmed Speakers and International Collaboration

The initial lineup of speakers includes a diverse group of professionals from music, media, and technology. South African participants include Elaine, Nkosiyati Khumalo (Billboard Africa), Filah Lah Lah, and Rofhiwa Maneta (Meta). International speakers confirmed are Steffen Holly (Fraunhofer IDMT, Germany) and Alex Jukes (Jukebox PR, UK). Additional speakers are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Partnership with the Recording Industry of South Africa

ARMC 2026 has established a strategic partnership with the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA). This collaboration intends to involve both major and independent labels in discussions concerning rights management, sustainability, and the long-term viability of the music industry.

Genre Spotlights: Lekompo and Maskandi

The conference will feature genre-focused programming, with particular attention given to Lekompo and Maskandi. Lekompo, originating from Limpopo, has gained significant popularity through artists like Shandesh and Kharishma, demonstrating the reach of regional sounds through digital platforms. Sessions on Maskandi will explore the genre’s adaptation to modern distribution methods while preserving its cultural heritage.

Conference Program Pillars and the AI Think Tank Roundtable

The conference program is structured around four key pillars: Live & Entertainment, Innovation & Music Tech, Education & Employment, and Export & Building Bridges. A new addition to the program is the AI Think Tank Roundtable, initially launched in Berlin. This roundtable will bring together leaders from the music and technology sectors to discuss ethical AI usage, creator protection, fair attribution, and the development of independent Pan-African ecosystems.

Evening Showcase Program

In addition to the daytime agenda, ARMC will offer an expanded evening program featuring live music showcases throughout Johannesburg.

The ARMC aims to foster ongoing industry conversations, emphasizing exchange, accountability, and sustainable structural change within the African music scene.
