President John Dramani Mahama addressed the Official Opening of the 2026 Judicial Year and the 20th Anniversary of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha, Tanzania, on March 2. Mahama highlighted progress in strengthening justice systems across the continent and underscored the shared responsibility of African nations.
President Mahama reflected on the advancements made in reinforcing justice systems throughout Africa, citing Ghana’s efforts to bolster its own judicial institutions. He shared a personal perspective on the significance of justice and human rights, recalling past anxieties and expressing a sense of reassurance.
Mahama acknowledged the African Court’s vital role over the past two decades in protecting the rights and dignity of African people beyond national borders. He noted the court’s ability to operate across national boundaries.
Addressing the audience in Arusha, a city recognized for its commitment to human rights and the protection of African dignity, Mahama stressed the urgency of collective action. He urged African leaders to fulfill promises made to future generations, referencing signed pledges and commitments.
Mahama called for a deeper commitment to the African Court to ensure its continued growth and enhance its global standing. He expressed a vision for the court to become a leading international judicial body and a model for others by its 40th anniversary.
