Athletics Add International Free Agents

Written by on January 16, 2026

The Oakland Athletics added several international prospects to their farm system Friday as teams were permitted to sign international free agents. The Athletics utilized a significant portion of their allocated budget to bolster their already improved farm system.

Johenssy Colome Signing

The Athletics signed Dominican shortstop Johenssy Colome to a $4 million contract. Colome is ranked as the #5 overall prospect in this year’s international class. The 17-year-old is the son of former major leaguer Jesus Colome and cousin of Alex Colome. Scouts describe Colome as a right-handed hitter with explosive hands and a solid contact rate, noting a power potential reminiscent of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He is expected to initially play shortstop, though a position change may be necessary as he develops. This signing represents the highest-ranked addition to the A’s system since Luis Morales was signed in 2023.

Ricky Duran Acquisition

The Athletics also reached an agreement with Dominican shortstop Ricky Duran, ranked #33 in this year’s class. Duran, also 17, is considered a more well-rounded prospect than Colome, exhibiting a line-drive approach and potential to handle shortstop or other infield positions. Comparisons to major leaguer Willy Adames have been made. Duran’s swing is described as having room to develop extra-base power as he adds strength.

Jose Perdomo and Other Signings

The Athletics added Venezuelan catcher Jose Perdomo, the #45-ranked prospect, to their system. Perdomo, the younger brother of a highly-rated prospect from the previous year, is considered a defensive-minded player with potential power. The team also signed a third baseman, an outfielder, and a left-handed pitcher, bringing the total number of signings to seven.

Farm System Impact and Future Outlook

While the signings may not significantly alter national farm system rankings, they add further talent and potential to the A’s organization. The newly signed players are expected to begin their professional careers in the Dominican Summer League, with the goal of progressing toward the major leagues. The Athletics allocated $7.3 million to this year’s international class, spending $4 million on Colome.
