Bangladesh sees increase in killings report finds

A Canada-based advocacy group, the Global Centre for Democratic Governance (GCDG), has expressed serious concerns regarding a rise in extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh. The group’s assessment is based on media reports and suggests a significant increase since September 8, 2024.
The GCDG alleges that the reports of extrajudicial killings have increased as the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, extends its tenure. They state that the government’s control over the press contributes to underreporting of these incidents, with journalists facing repercussions for investigating or publishing related stories.
Extrajudicial Killings and Press Freedom Concerns
The GCDG reports that at least 85 individuals have been subjected to extrajudicial execution since September 8, 2024, though human rights observers believe the actual number is considerably higher. The organization claims that the unelected Yunus regime lacks accountability and dismisses allegations of extrajudicial killings. They emphasize the need for impartial investigations into each instance and prosecution of those responsible, advocating for an end to impunity. The GCDG has called for national and international human rights organizations and global institutions to conduct independent inquiries and hold perpetrators accountable.
Mob Violence and Human Rights Abuses
A Dhaka-based human rights organization, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), released a report in December 2025 detailing widespread human rights abuses in Bangladesh. The report highlights an increase in mob violence, extrajudicial killings, deaths in custody, persecution of minorities, political violence, and suppression of press freedom.
ASK’s findings indicate that mob violence resulted in 197 deaths between January and December 2025, compared to 128 deaths in the previous year. The report states that at least 293 people have been killed in mob violence since the Yunus-led interim government took office in 2024.
Targeted Attacks on Minorities
