Bett confirms US expansion as global ambitions come into focus

Organizers announced the launch of Bett USA, scheduled for November 2027 in Nashville. Duncan Verry, Bett Portfolio Director at Hyve Group, emphasized the event’s broader ambitions, stating it aims to be a year-round professional and policy touchpoint rather than solely a trade show. Over 220 ministers and civil servants from more than 50 countries participated in Bett’s first ministerial symposium, supported by UNESCO, UNICEF, and the OECD. The show anticipates 60,000 visitors over three days, with all sessions being CPD accredited.

Government sets direction as AI takes centre stage

UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson delivered a keynote address outlining the government’s plans to incorporate AI into education while prioritizing safety and wellbeing. Phillipson described AI as a potential turning point for learning, emphasizing that technology should support teachers. She discussed updated safety standards, partnerships with technology providers, investment in EdTech trials, new qualifications in data science and AI, and expanded use of assistive technology for students with special educational needs and disabilities.

Industry backs standards and trusted supply

Caroline Wright, Director General at the British Educational Suppliers Association, welcomed the government’s updated digital safety standards. She stated that consistency across the sector is crucial for schools to confidently adopt technology, highlighting the role of trusted suppliers and industry codes of practice in protecting learners. Wright also emphasized the importance of safeguarding UK EdTech capacity, particularly as British suppliers support schools using the UK curriculum internationally.

Hannah Fry and Amol Rajan cut through the AI hype

Mathematician Hannah Fry and Journalist Amol Rajan participated in a discussion focusing on clarity and realism regarding AI. Fry cautioned against overblown claims and loose definitions, noting that AI is often presented as a universal solution. She acknowledged recent advancements, stating that AI systems can now understand language and concepts, enabling them to identify patterns that humans might miss. Rajan steered the conversation toward public trust and perception, exploring how AI is framed and how educators and policymakers can balance optimism with caution.
