Bien and Tusker Launch Program to Develop Kenyan Musicians
Written by Black Hot Fire Network Team on February 9, 2026
Bien-Aime Baraza, a Grammy-winning songwriter and member of Sauti Sol, has partnered with Tusker to launch “Base to Billboardz,” a career accelerator program for Kenyan musicians. The initiative aims to develop promising artists and propel them to international recognition.
The program, launched in Nairobi, is structured as a six-month artistic boot camp, running from February to July 2026. Thirty artists will participate, receiving mentorship and training to enhance their skills and business knowledge.
Program Focus
The program seeks to identify artists who already possess a foundation, having released an EP and established a following. The focus is on providing the structure, network, and mentorship needed to transition from being recognized as Kenyan artists to achieving global prominence. A key element is addressing the lack of artist development within the Kenyan music industry, particularly in areas like publishing, branding, and distribution. Participants will engage in masterclasses covering songwriting, performance, and music business, led by experienced industry professionals.
Creative Collective and Album
The program will conclude with the formation of a creative collective. The top six artists selected will collaborate on a joint album, with funding and distribution provided by the program. This collaborative approach is intended to emulate the success of Sauti Sol and emphasize the benefits of teamwork. The program will not award a cash prize; instead, it will provide investment in production, music videos, and marketing support.
Supporting Kenyan Culture
Bien-Aime Baraza views the initiative as a legacy project, drawing on his own experiences in the music industry to guide the next generation of artists. Tusker’s involvement reinforces its commitment to supporting Kenyan culture and investing in the creative economy, aligning with the interests of young people.
The Rise of African Music
The launch of “Base to Billboardz” coincides with the growing global popularity of African music genres like Afrobeats and Amapiano. The program aims to elevate the profile of Kenyan music within this broader landscape by emphasizing structure and quality. The selection process is underway, and the industry anticipates the emergence of new talent from the program.
