Bien’s New Album Brings Global Star Power to Kenya’s Music Industry

Prolific Kenyan singer Bien-Aimé Baraza is bringing together a cross-border lineup of musicians for his upcoming album, Alusa Continua, a 17-track project that underscores the growing ambition of East African pop to reach audiences beyond the region.

Scheduled for release on November 20, the album features American rapper 2 Chainz, Nigerian singer Oxlade, Tanzanian star Alikiba and Kenyan rapper Femi One, alongside a wider roster of regional and international collaborators. Bien announced the release date and tracklist on social media.

The project arrives as Bien continues to establish his identity as a solo artist following his years with Sauti Sol, one of Kenya’s most prominent pop groups. Its collaborations span multiple markets, bringing together established names and emerging performers across a range of musical styles.

The lineup includes 2 Chainz and Papa Gen Z on Signs, Oxlade and Ontiri on How Can I Forget, Femi One and Papaa Maasai on Mayolo, and Alikiba on Finale. Other collaborators include Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka, The Compozers, Coster Ojwang, Ywaya Tajiri, Bryce One, Kaycyy, Tulwap Kipsigis and Nono Melodies.

For Bien, the album represents an opportunity to turn a growing network of musical partnerships into a broader solo catalogue. For Kenya’s music industry, it offers another test of whether collaborations across African markets can help local artists expand their audiences and commercial reach.

Building a cross-border audience

The project follows the strong reception of Finale, Bien’s collaboration with Alikiba, which has helped demonstrate the audience potential of music that moves between Kenya and Tanzania.

Cross-border collaborations can give artists access to new listeners, media markets and promotional networks. Featuring internationally recognised performers can also attract attention to a release before its debut, although commercial returns ultimately depend on streaming performance, audience retention, distribution and marketing.

Bien’s new album combines that international approach with a substantial Kenyan presence. Femi One, Coster Ojwang, Bryce One and other local collaborators feature alongside artists from across the continent and beyond.

The strategy comes as African music increasingly operates across national boundaries, with streaming platforms and social media allowing songs to travel faster than traditional radio markets once permitted. Yet visibility alone does not guarantee sustainable earnings for performers, songwriters and producers, making the conversion of attention into revenue an important measure of success.

A new chapter after Sauti Sol

Bien’s transition into a solo career has given him room to develop his own repertoire while retaining the collaborative approach that helped define his work with Sauti Sol.

With Alusa Continua, the singer is assembling a wider musical network around his individual brand. The album’s 17 tracks provide space for both solo performances and collaborations, giving listeners a broader view of his artistic direction.

The release will also provide an opportunity to assess how effectively Kenyan musicians can combine local identity with international partnerships without losing the distinctive qualities that set their music apart.

Neither the album’s commercial prospects nor its impact on the wider Kenyan music market can yet be measured. Its November 20 release will provide the first indication of how listeners respond to the project as a complete body of work.

For now, Alusa Continua places Bien among the Kenyan artists seeking to turn regional recognition into a wider international presence, with a release strategy built around a diverse roster of collaborators and an increasingly interconnected African music scene.
