Each February, Black History Month is observed across Canada with events and celebrations recognizing the legacy and contributions of Black people and their communities.
The theme for the 2026 Black History Month is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” This theme marks three decades of Black History Month in Canada, highlighting the ongoing contributions of Black Canadians throughout history. It acknowledges the significant roles of nation builders who advocated for civil rights, advanced social justice, and influenced Canada’s cultural and political landscape, while also recognizing emerging leaders and innovators shaping the future.
The theme emphasizes continuity, resilience, and progress by reflecting on historical achievements and inspiring future possibilities. It aims to foster intergenerational dialogue, strengthen community pride, and support equity and inclusion. The 30-year milestone provides an opportunity to honor legacy, celebrate current contributions, and empower future generations.
Biographies of notable Black Canadians who have shaped Canadian heritage and identity are available for review.
A digital toolkit is also available, offering resources such as posters, social media images, and a virtual background to promote Black History Month.
Canadians are encouraged to learn more about Black Canadian communities and their ongoing impact on Canada.
