Brandy Receives Black Music Icon Award

Brandy Norwood, known for her vocal layering and riffs, will receive the Black Music Icon Award from the Recording Academy. The honor comes after nearly four decades in the music industry.

The ceremony, hosted by the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective, is scheduled for January 29, 2026, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, just prior to the 2026 Grammy Awards. Brandy expressed gratitude, stating the award signifies more than words and celebrates the legacy of Black music.

Additional Honorees

Alongside Brandy, gospel icon Kirk Franklin will also be recognized with the Black Music Icon Award. Pharrell Williams will receive the Dr. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. described Brandy, Franklin, and Williams as “true visionaries” who have shaped culture and inspired generations.

The Black Music Collective

The Black Music Collective, established in 2020, focuses on amplifying Black voices within the Academy and the broader music community. It is composed of prominent Black music creators and professionals. According to Mason, the collective is essential for driving the Recording Academy into a new era and benefiting its membership.
