Mike Andrews, known as “Mahanjam Mike,” a celebrated broadcaster and music executive, has died in Nairobi at the age of 87. Andrews was the founder of AI Records, a label that significantly shaped East African music history.
Born in London in 1938, Andrews moved to Kenya at age six. He became a prominent figure in Kenyan music and broadcasting.
Andrews began his career at 19, securing a position at Cable and Wireless. He advocated for the inclusion of rock and roll music for younger audiences. His radio show, Music of the Moment, gained immense popularity, introducing artists like Elvis and the Beatles to Kenyan listeners. Andrews subsequently shifted his focus to promoting local music, a decision that proved pivotal in his career.
Recognizing a demand for recordings of Kenyan music, Andrews established AI Records. The label quickly became known for its high-quality production and support of prominent artists, including Orchestra Super Mazembe and Afro 70. Andrews refined genres like Benga and Rumba, creating polished recordings that resonated across East Africa.
For many years, AI Records was recognized for its commitment to quality and ethical business practices within a challenging industry. Andrews prioritized artist compensation and copyright protection. In 2018, Universal Music Group acquired a majority stake in AI Records, facilitating the digitization and global distribution of its extensive archive of East African music.
Beyond his professional achievements, Andrews was known for his storytelling and deep connection to Kenya. He observed and documented the country’s transition from colonial rule to independence and the shift from analog to digital technologies, consistently championing the role of music throughout these changes.
Following the announcement of his death, numerous tributes have been shared by artists, producers, and fans. Andrews is remembered for his dedication to East African music and his belief in the value of local artists and their recordings.
