Kenya Plans CAF Inspection for 2027 AFCON Venues
The Kenyan government intends to invite a Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspection team next month to assess the progress of stadium construction and rehabilitation efforts ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This move aims to ensure compliance with CAF and FIFA standards.
Stadium Construction Progress
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, reported that construction at the 60,000-seater Raila Odinga International Stadium is approximately 85 percent complete. Rehabilitation work is also underway at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium.
Upcoming CAF Inspection
Mvurya stated that inviting CAF officials early will allow for feedback and incorporation of suggestions during the ongoing construction phase. The inspection will validate the work completed thus far.
Confidence in Hosting Capabilities
Mvurya expressed confidence that Kenya, alongside the East Africa region under the Pamoja Countries, is prepared to host an AFCON tournament that meets world-class standards. The government has invested significantly in sports infrastructure to facilitate a memorable event.
Other Key Projects
The progress of seven other key projects critical to the successful delivery of AFCON 2027 were also reviewed, all reported to be at advanced stages of construction. The contractor is expected to finalize external works and training facilities by the end of February.
Government Commitment
Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya affirmed Kenya’s commitment to safeguarding its AFCON hosting rights by ensuring all designated sports facilities are completed on time. She highlighted the effectiveness of a whole-of-government approach in delivering these legacy projects.
Stadium Naming Process
The formal adoption of the name Raila Odinga International Stadium, replacing Talanta Sports Complex, is currently underway.

The site visit was attended by Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports) and Dr. Patrick Mariru (Defence), SA Sports, Evans Achoki (Sports Kenya), DG Timothy Kilimo (Sports Kenya), Board Chairperson Mark Lomunokol (Sports Kenya), and other senior government officials.
