For most of the twentieth century, the marshland tucked into Chicago’s Calumet region was treated as little more than industrial leftover space, a stretch of land scarred by heavy manufacturing, solid waste dumping and decades of altered water flow. Few people expected anything to thrive there. Yet buried among the reeds and standing water of Indian Ridge Marsh, scientists eventually found something unexpected: one of the largest nesting colonies of black-crowned night herons in the Upper Midwest, a wading bird now listed as endangered in Illinois. The discovery turned a patch of land long dismissed as wasteland into one of the most closely studied bird colonies in the region, offering a rare window into how nature can take hold even in a landscape shaped almost entirely by industry. Even as conservationists work to lure the herons back, the marsh’s unlikely history stands as a powerful reminder that ecological recovery rarely follows a straight path, often unfolding through setbacks, displacement, and years of patient, uncertain effort.
The Calumet area on Chicago’s far south side once supported some of the most extensive wetlands in the region, but decades of steel production, landfill operations and chemical waste disposal transformed much of that landscape beyond recognition. Altered hydrology from decades of industrial use left the remaining wetlands fragmented and unpredictable, with water levels shifting in ways that made the area seem far too disturbed to support sensitive wildlife. The city’s own account of the district, published as part of Chicago’s official Nature and Wildlife Plan for the Big Marsh area, describes how repeated flooding and blocked culverts forced entire bird colonies to shift location as the industrial landscape around them kept changing.
Despite that damaged setting, black-crowned night herons kept returning to nest at five known sites across the Lake Calumet wetlands between 1984 and 2003, with Indian Ridge Marsh emerging as their primary nesting ground. A peer-reviewed study titled Black-crowned Night-Herons of the Lake Calumet Region, Chicago, Illinois: Nesting Ecology of Black-crowned Night-Herons at Lake Calumet Wetlands, published in the Illinois Natural History Survey Bulletin, tracked the colony’s nesting behaviour across the 2002 and 2003 breeding seasons in close detail. The researchers found that dense stands of common reed, known scientifically as Phragmites australis, provided the primary nesting cover for the colony during that period, while cottonwood trees had supported nesting through the late 1980s and mid-1990s before the birds shifted almost entirely to the marsh vegetation itself.
The study tracked reproduction closely enough to calculate a recruitment rate, defined as the number of young surviving to 15 days old for every nesting pair. In 2002, that figure came out to 1.74 young per pair, slightly below the threshold generally considered necessary to sustain a stable night heron population over time. The following year told a more encouraging story, with recruitment climbing to 2.22 young per pair, among the highest rates recorded for the species anywhere. The researchers found that poorly built, flat nests were the leading cause of failure at the site, since eggs would simply roll out into the surrounding water, while losses to predators from gulls and other animals played a comparatively minor role in the colony’s overall breeding success.
The breeding success documented in the early 2000s did not hold. Around 2010 and 2011, the black-crowned night heron colony abandoned Indian Ridge Marsh and the wider Calumet region entirely, relocating north to Lincoln Park, where the Lincoln Park Zoo has since become the primary nesting site for the species in Illinois. The timing coincided with restoration work undertaken at the marsh by the Army Corps of Engineers, which aimed to improve the site’s degraded wetland habitat but left it without enough mature nesting trees during construction, a gap that appears to have pushed the herons out even as the underlying goal of the work was to help them. What looked at the time like a habitat improvement effort ended up displacing the very colony it was meant to support, and the birds have not returned to nest at Indian Ridge Marsh since.
The presence of a major breeding colony inside one of Chicago’s most heavily altered landscapes points to a pattern conservationists have observed at brownfield and post-industrial sites elsewhere too. Once industrial activity stops, disturbed land is often left with low nutrient soils, patchy vegetation and reduced human interference, conditions that can favour species which struggle to find room in tidier, more manicured green spaces. For black-crowned night herons specifically, the marsh’s dense emergent reed cover offered exactly the kind of concealment and structure the birds needed to nest safely, even though the surrounding landscape carried the visible scars of decades of heavy industry.
More than a decade after the colony’s departure, the site’s history is now driving an active effort to lure the birds home rather than simply protect a colony still in place. Groups including The Wetlands Initiative have focused restoration work on rebuilding hemi marsh, a habitat structure made up of roughly equal parts open water and emergent vegetation that historically dominated the Calumet region and remains critical for the area’s declining wetland birds. Researchers at the University of Illinois, through the university’s ongoing black-crowned night heron research program, have placed painted decoys and speakers broadcasting heron calls at former rookery sites in the Calumet region, using a technique called conspecific attraction that relies on the birds’ tendency to settle near others of their own species. Whether the herons return to nest at Indian Ridge Marsh or elsewhere in the Calumet wetlands remains an open question, and the very existence of this decoy and call broadcast effort is itself evidence of the colony’s absence rather than proof that it never left.
Indian Ridge Marsh remains an unusual case precisely because so little was expected of it. A landscape shaped by steel mills, waste disposal and decades of industrial runoff was never meant to support one of the region’s most significant colonies of an endangered wading bird, yet that is exactly what scientists documented once they began paying close attention. The marsh’s story has become a reference point for conservationists working on brownfield sites elsewhere, offering evidence that land written off as ecologically worthless can, under the right conditions, support species that struggle to find room anywhere else. As restoration work continues across the wider Calumet region, researchers say the marsh stands as a reminder that biodiversity does not always wait for a clean slate; sometimes it simply finds a way to take hold in whatever space is left behind.
