Gene Simmons, a member of the band KISS, recently expressed his opinion on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during an interview on the LegendsNLeaders podcast. His comments sparked a response from Chuck D of Public Enemy.
During the LegendsNLeaders podcast interview, Gene Simmons stated that hip-hop, opera, and symphony orchestras do not belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, emphasizing the institution’s name. He argued that these genres are distinct from rock music.
Chuck D addressed Simmons’ remarks in an interview with TMZ. He noted that Simmons has made similar statements periodically, particularly when hip-hop artists are inducted. Chuck D argued that the “roll” in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame encompasses genres that emerged after rock music splintered in the 1960s, including soul music, reggae, and hip-hop. He suggested that KISS, while influential in rock, lacks the broader musicality represented by these other genres.
BraveWords Records, a platform featuring artists such as Alcatrazz, Bangalore Choir, and Crimson Glory, published an article detailing the exchange. The LegendsNLeaders interview with Gene Simmons and the TMZ interview with Chuck D are available online.
