Violence Erupts at Right-Wing Demonstration in the Netherlands

A right-wing demonstration in the Netherlands turned violent on Saturday, with rioters clashing with police and vandalizing a political party office. The unrest occurred weeks before the country’s general election.

Demonstration and Clashes

Hundreds of people participated in the demonstration, many wearing black and waving flags, advocating for stricter asylum policies. The demonstration escalated into chaos as rioters threw objects at officers and set a police car on fire. Police responded by using tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the crowd.

Targeting of Political Party Office

Rioters also attacked an office belonging to the centrist political party D66. Party leader Rob Jetten condemned the actions, stating that the party would not be intimidated and would continue to work for the country.

Disruption Near Parliament

A smaller group of rioters headed toward the Dutch parliament complex, which is currently undergoing renovations and is fenced off.

Election Context

The violence comes before a general election scheduled for October 29. The election was called after anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders withdrew his party from the ruling coalition due to disagreements over migration policies.

Condemnation from Wilders

Geert Wilders condemned the rioters, referring to them as “idiots” and “scum,” and criticizing them for blocking a highway and attacking police.
