The 2026 Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, has focused on the necessity for mining companies to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining competitiveness and attracting global investment. Discussions also addressed the challenges presented by evolving extraction methods.
Elsona van Huyssteen, Principal Researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), emphasized the importance of effective technology for modern extraction to achieve both sustainability and increased productivity in the mining sector. Rapid implementation of new methods, particularly without adequate regulation and community consultation, can pose difficulties for both local populations and the environment.
The CSIR invests significantly in testing facilities and laboratories to assess the safety and potential adverse effects of new technologies. The organization also allocates substantial resources to environmental rehabilitation efforts, concentrating on air pollution control, water management, and ecosystem accountability. The CSIR’s responsibilities extend beyond direct support of mining operations to encompass broader socio-economic development initiatives.
Achieving the CSIR’s goals requires increased financial support, as current government funding represents a limited portion of the necessary resources. Partnerships with industry are therefore essential. Companies such as Anglo American and Kumba are making considerable investments in community development, local collaborations, and specialized research programs. These industry participants also support technologies aimed at advancing industrial development and improving environmental outcomes.
