European Court Thanks Greece in Floridis Case

Justice Minister Giorgos Florides met with officials at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) headquarters in Strasbourg. The discussions centered on Greece’s commitment to the Court and international law.

Meeting with ECtHR Officials

Justice Minister Giorgos Florides met with Mattias Guyomar, the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mariolena Tsirlis, the Court’s Secretary General, and Ioannis Ktistakis, the National Judge, at the ECtHR seat. President Guyomar expressed gratitude to Florides and the Greek Government for their strong support of the ECHR and the European Convention on Human Rights. He specifically praised the contribution of National Judge Ktistakis and the excellent cooperation with the Greek Permanent Representation to the Council of Europe.

Greece’s Commitment to International Law

President Guyomar emphasized the importance of Greece’s stance, particularly given current trends of democratic regression and the rise of populism in Europe. Justice Minister Florides affirmed Greece’s continued commitment to international law and the independence and integrity of the Court, stating this was the Prime Minister’s firm position, despite the challenges presented by the current geopolitical environment.

Future Initiatives

Florides and Guyomar discussed potential supportive measures and initiatives the Ministry of Justice plans to implement. These initiatives aim to improve the enforcement of the Court’s judgments by providing national judges with more comprehensive information regarding ECtHR case law.

The meeting was also attended by Nicolas Sigalas, the permanent representative of Greece to the Council of Europe; Gerasimos Dondas, the deputy permanent representative of Greece to the Council of Europe; Eftichia Katsigaraki, the director general of special legal issues of the Ministry of Justice; and Ioanna Karyophylli, a director at the Ministry of Justice.
