Film Director’s Attackers Release Music as Family Grieves

The fatal assault of film director Kim Chang-min in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, has sparked significant controversy regarding the initial police investigation. Public outcry has increased as the bereaved family reportedly gathered evidence to aid the investigation, while the two suspects remain free on bail.

The incident occurred on October 20 of last year at a restaurant in Sutaek-dong, Guri. Kim Chang-min and his son were dining when a dispute over noise escalated into an assault by two men in their 20s. Kim was hospitalized and later declared brain-dead on November 7, after which he donated his organs, saving four lives.

Initial Investigation and Arrest Warrant Rejections

Police initially filed for an arrest warrant for one suspect, identified as Suspect A, but the court rejected it. A subsequent warrant for Suspect B was also denied, citing a fixed residence and no apparent risk of evidence destruction. Early in the investigation, police reportedly identified only one assailant.

Family’s Role in Evidence Gathering

The Kim Chang-min family reportedly obtained closed-circuit television footage and witness statements, which they then submitted to the prosecution. Following a request for a supplementary investigation, both suspects were referred to prosecutors on charges of assault resulting in death without detention.

Reinvestigation and Police Review

Due to the growing controversy surrounding the investigation, the prosecution has assembled a dedicated team of three prosecutors and five investigators to conduct a reinvestigation. The team stated they will utilize forensic techniques and medical expertise. The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency is also reviewing the initial response of the Guri Police Station.

Misidentification and Allegations of Organized Crime Ties

Photos circulating online initially identified two individuals as the assailants. However, it was later clarified that one individual in the photos was unrelated to the case, and the other was present attempting to de-escalate the situation. Allegations have also surfaced linking the assailants to a local organized crime group in Guri, though the organization denies their membership.

Suspects’ Activities Following the Incident

Witnesses reported seeing one of the assailants at a gym and jogging after the assault. One of the suspects is reportedly a fitness trainer, while the other operates a delivery business.

Release of Music Track and Family’s Response

Public anger intensified when one of the suspects released a hip-hop music track on May 17, approximately four months after Director Kim’s death. The track was subsequently removed from YouTube. The Kim Chang-min family stated they have not received any communication from the suspects and feel disregarded.

Legal Commentary and Public Demand for Justice

Attorney Son Su-ho commented on the discrepancies between available video evidence and the investigation’s findings, calling for a clear explanation. Online, there has been a continued demand for severe punishment for the individuals involved in the assault.
