Freshlyground has released a new single, “Take Me Home,” featuring vocalist Mbali Makhoba. The release marks a shift in the band’s lineup and creative direction, with Makhoba taking on the role of lead singer.
About the New Single
“Take Me Home” centers around Makhoba’s vocal performance and explores themes of personal growth and the search for peace. Makhoba described the song as a reflection of her own journey and a desire for calm. The accompanying music video, directed by Ian Gabriel, visually introduces Makhoba as the band’s new front figure.
Song Development
The song’s composition developed over several months through collaborative writing sessions. Guitarist Josh Hawks initially created the chords, with further contributions from band members Simon Attwood, Julio Iglesia, and Chris Gascoyne. Makhoba then added the melody and vocal rhythms, resulting in an immediate positive response.
Band’s Perspective
Peter Cohen noted that “Take Me Home” represents a broader evolution for Freshlyground, highlighting Makhoba’s impact on the band’s new sound. He expressed excitement about this new iteration of the group. The single follows two previous releases and is part of a thematic exploration of belonging and emotional refuge within the upcoming album.
Freshlyground’s History
Formed in Cape Town in 2002, Freshlyground is recognized for blending Afropop, soul, jazz, indie rock, and traditional African music. The band gained international recognition with songs like “Doo Be Doo” and “I’d Like,” and through a collaboration with Shakira on “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Zolani Mahola previously served as the band’s vocalist for much of its career.
Future Plans
Freshlyground is currently working on an album expected later this year, and “Take Me Home” signifies a new chapter for the band with the introduction of Makhoba as the lead vocalist.
