Gabon Boosts Digital Economy Push with 82 Billion CFA Franc Investment Plan

Gabon is positioning digital technology at the centre of its national economic transformation strategy, according to an interview with the Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, published in Économies Africaines. The minister outlined the government’s ambition to make the digital sector a key pillar of sovereignty, economic diversification, and job creation in the country.

Speaking about the country’s strategic direction, the minister highlighted the priorities of Gabon’s 2025–2030 digital development plan, which focuses on strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding public service digitalisation, improving cybersecurity, and supporting innovation ecosystems. He noted that the plan is closely aligned with the country’s broader national development agenda and international commitments, including engagement with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

A key component of this strategy is a 2026 budget allocation of 82 billion CFA francs dedicated to the digital sector. According to the minister, these investments will be used to accelerate infrastructure development, modernise public administration, and support the rollout of digital platforms that enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery.

Mark-Alexandre Doumba emphasised that initiatives such as the “GIMAC” programme and the “Magadipe” digitalisation platform are central to improving financial inclusion, modernising payments, and advancing secure digital transactions across the country. He also pointed to the importance of leveraging international partnerships and technical cooperation to strengthen Gabon’s digital capabilities.

The minister further underscored Gabon’s growing international presence in digital governance, referencing his role within ITU structures, which he said reinforces the country’s ambition to become a credible and active player in global digital transformation discussions.

Overall, the government reiterated that digital transformation is not only an economic priority but also a strategic lever for sovereignty, competitiveness, and sustainable development in Gabon.
