Global Africa Symposium in Miramar showcases the diaspora

The African diaspora and the continent will be on display at this year’s Global Africa Symposium in Miramar.

This free event welcomes all to learn about Africa, experience its diverse cultures and discover opportunities for further exploration.

Hosted by Commissioner Avril Cherasard, the event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at City Hall. It is the second annual gathering; the first also was held in Miramar.

“Global Africa represents the dynamic interconnectedness between Africa, its diaspora, and the broader global community. It underscores Africa’s growing influence in international trade, innovation, culture, and diplomacy, while celebrating the vital contributions of the African diaspora to global development and cultural exchange,” the event press release reads.

This year’s theme is The Africa We Want: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It highlights economic growth, trade and innovation.

Registration is required, and more than 650 people have registered as of June 2.

Keynote speaker Rohan Marley, a Jamaican entrepreneur and son of Bob Marley, will join for a fireside chat. His father famously pushed for the unification of all Africans.

Marley is the founder of Marley Coffee and studied at the University of Miami, where he also played football.

The day will begin with a commemoration of Africa Day, which celebrates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1963.

The morning highlight is the global village, where attendees can enjoy Afrobeats, African cuisine and a fashion showcase.

Then, a panel including a representative from the Miami-Dade County Office of International Trade Consortium will discuss trade, innovation, AI and social change.

The news release describes the event as “driven by a shared identity, collective purpose, and the enduring spirit of unity and self-determination.”
