Golfer Andrea Pavan has withdrawn from this week’s DP World Tour event in South Africa following a serious accident. He was hospitalized after falling down an elevator shaft.
The incident occurred in a building where Pavan was staying. Reports indicate the elevator doors opened without a car present, and Pavan stepped through, falling multiple floors.
According to reports from Ryan French of Monday Q Info and Brentley Romine of Golf Channel, the 36-year-old golfer sustained significant injuries, including damage to his shoulder and back. He underwent extensive surgeries Wednesday evening to address these injuries. J.T. Higgins, Pavan’s former college coach at Texas A&M, stated that Pavan is in good spirits and thankful to be alive.
Pavan released a statement through the DP World Tour on Friday, expressing gratitude for the support he has received. He confirmed undergoing surgery on his shoulder and back and acknowledged the extensive rehabilitation and hard work ahead. He also thanked the Mediclinic hospital staff, the DP World Tour, the Sunshine Tour, and Johann and Gaynor Rupert for their assistance. Pavan conveyed appreciation for the visits and messages from fellow players, caddies, and staff.
Former teammate Matt Van Zandt has established a GoFundMe page to support Pavan’s recovery. As of Friday morning, the page had raised nearly $42,000. The GoFundMe description details the severity of Pavan’s injuries, including severe shoulder damage and fractures to several vertebrae, and notes that he is expected to remain in South Africa for several weeks before being evaluated for travel back to the United States. His wife, Audra, is traveling to be with him, and his sister is traveling from abroad.
Pavan has eight professional career victories, most recently winning the 2019 BMW International Open in Germany. He was part of the Texas A&M team that won the 2009 NCAA championship. He has participated in three major championships, including the 2023 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.
