Andre Agassi had won eight Grand Slam titles and spent years competing at the highest level of tennis. Yet, one of his biggest inspirations came from watching someone else approach everyday life. His wife, Steffi Graf, taught him lessons that went beyond the tennis court. In September 2005, the American openly discussed how the German tennis legend influenced his discipline, priorities and outlook on life.At the time, Agassi was 35 and competing in his 20th consecutive US Open. He had already built an extraordinary career, but he credited Graf with helping him understand that success in tennis also begins with the way a person lives away from the sport.

Andre Agassi revealed how Steffi Graf’s daily habits changed his outlook on life

On Sept. 3, 2005, Agassi defeated Czech player Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the fourth round of the US Open. However, his comments after the match offered a glimpse into the influence Graf had on him.Speaking to reporters at the US Open, Agassi called watching his wife live her life his greatest lesson. He admired the way she stayed committed to her values and kept her priorities clear.“I suppose watching her going about her life is the greatest lesson I could learn,” Agassi said during his post-match press conference, as reported by Reuters on September 4, 2005.He also explained how Graf’s approach influenced his own attitude towards tennis. According to Agassi, discipline and commitment in everyday life could eventually reflect in a player’s performance.“When you start showing more discipline on the court, then your life starts to reflect that,” he added. For Agassi, Graf’s influence was not limited to her achievements as a 22-time Grand Slam champion. He admired how she handled her responsibilities and approached each day with focus.

Steffi Graf’s influence even changed Andre Agassi’s approach to tennis

Agassi also looked back at the way Graf handled her own career. Although he had not witnessed most of her professional journey up close, he had learned a great deal from watching her outside competition.“Seeing how Stef went about parts of her career, most of it I wasn’t anywhere near seeing close up, but more importantly how she goes about her life,” he told reporters at the 2005 US Open.He particularly admired her ability to reflect her values and priorities through everyday decisions.“It’s pretty clear focus, every day reflecting her values and priorities. So I aspire to that,” Agassi said. There was also a lighter moment during the same press conference. Agassi joked about how his appearance had changed over the years. The American, once known for his bleached hair, denim shorts and colourful outfits, had adopted a much simpler tennis wardrobe.“I’m at the stage where I’ve just thought to myself, ‘If I dress like my wife, maybe I can play like my wife’,” he joked. The comment drew laughter from reporters. However, it also captured his admiration for Graf.Agassi eventually retired in 2006, while Graf had already left professional tennis in 1999. Their careers followed different paths, but his September 2005 comments showed how much he valued the lessons he learned from his wife. For an eight-time Grand Slam champion, one of his greatest inspirations came from watching the woman who had won 22 major singles titles.
